The World as He Sees It

Perspectives #2

The World as He Sees It

A.M. Arthur

And we're back in Straton where the story switched to Noel's memory challenged friend Tristan who hooks up with Jody's Porn partner Gabe Henson, Tony.

Too much fellatio and sodomy for my taste, terms probably not in vogue here.

If you've seen the movie Awakenings you know about the drug trials that restored memory to those who participated. Alas, always side effects to any drug.

And since this is a romance there has to be an HEA.

The Truth As He Knows It

Perspectives #1

The Truth As He Knows It

A.M. Arthur

Noel Carlson is a gay cop, not out to his fellow officers but scarred due to a gay bashing that brain damaged his buddy Tristan.

Jason McShane and Shane Joseph, Jody McShane, are look alike brothers, Jason elder by 8 years. They live in a shabby trailer and Jason works a Pet Feed Shop and guard duty. Shane at a Sandwich Deli and gigs as a stripper. Shane was sexually abused by a step-father after his brother was kicked out of the house. Jason did a stint in jail, one can imagine and Shane ended up in hospital.

Of course they're all stunningly handsome and gay though the jury is out on Jason, he has a girlfriend.

Jody/Shane and Noel share and off and on hot relationship. Much of this story is about the secrets they share. I like this author.

Baa Baa Black Sheep

Baa Baa Black Sheep

Gregory Boyington, Eric Jason Martin (Narrator)

Typical American jingoism. In writing a semi-biographical memoir the author suffers from no modesty. This is a tale of the air war in the Pacific during WW#2.

Included in the tale is the pilot's time as a prisoner of war after being shot down. And after the war six months a prisoner of the department's media circus.

The Innocent

Will Robie #1

The Innocent

David Baldacci, Ron McLarty (Narrator), Orlagh Cassidy (Narratot)

William Robie is the kind of black ops assassin one wishes didn't have to exist but because they do the secret service is necessary to guard the president and people like him. I joke that they protect Trump too well. At over 12 hours this audiobook leaves no detail unexplored, on the other hand unlike so many other such novels it leaves no loose ends. Can't say I knew exactly what I was getting into when I downloaded this book.

Heroes of Afghanistan

Black Ops: Heroes of Afghanistan #1

Heroes of Afghanistan

Eric Meyer

As it begins this book reads like many others I've encountered which appear to be from a vet suffering PTSD venting his angst in the wake of the trauma he has suffered. In fact the author is British and has written 30 similar books about military service and did serve in the Sandbox. Both the British and Canadians were sucked into America's war of reprisal in Afghanistan by politicians eager to curry favour with the US.

This book goes on to look at life from the side of ordinary Afghani citizens. Half the population is addicted to opium and the vendettas and hatreds and blood feuds make the Hatfields and the McCoys look like school yard tiffs.

Given the location violence and bloodshed is a given.

Loyalty and true love win all it seems.

Halifax Warden of the North

Halifax Warden of the North

Thomas H. Raddall

I'm reading an e-book version Goodreads doesn't know exists offered by the internet archive. Found it 6 months back and have just now gotten around to reading.

Interesting learning the background to place names. George Dunk was Earl of Halifax.

The treaty that gave Louisbourg back to the French gave the English assurance that the French Court would no longer harbour Bonnie Prince Charlie and a port in India. So much for their concern about North America. The connection with Charles Stuart was new to me. The Battle field at Culloden was a recent memory.

The founding of Halifax was the direct result of the need to counteract the threat posed by the French. The New Englanders who had captured Lousibourg were incensed. The first settlers of Halifax were the rabble of London whose chief interest was the promise of a year's provisions, not the prospect of labour clearing the townsite and building the town.

There is a distinct lack of arable land in the Halifax area for the growing of food and always has been. Any local springs have long since been destroyed.

The military, army and navy, have long been the lifeblood and bane of life for the residents of Halifax. Interference from across the pond always a factor and Britain's wars with France a continuing threat. When Britain zeroed in on Naval power press gangs became a constant irritant. Any able bodied male was at risk. Last I knew for a fee the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Halifax would impress you into the Navy. Though you would not today regain consciousness at sea.

Since the jails were the first to be emptied your fellow crew members were less than savoury.

It feels ironic to be reading about the US seeking to make Canada the 51st state at a time when Trump is making similar noises.

My maternal Grandfather got his Fenian Money but was never called upon to offer defence.

Confederation led to the economic decline of Nova Scotia in particular as Central Canada demanded trade restrictions with New England and flooded the province with their cheaper goods.

Fishermen formerly landed their catches in Boston, dropped over t0 the isles for Rum and ran the blockade to land it home.

My great-granfather's Boston Ansonian Clock still keeps time when I remember to wind it. My mother's ancient relatives came home in Summer from Boston, Mass. Just as my generation return from Ontario.

Halifax has ever had a love/hate relationship with the military, the navy in particular for much of its history a British Navy. When in port navy personnel outnumbered the civilian population many times over. Fresh from months at sea sailors sought the twin boons of grog shops and bordellos. The Halifax Explosion of 1917 was even studied by the Manhattan Project. The 1945 Bedford Magazine fire had the potential to blow Halifax off the face of the earth. VE Day caused a riot Halifax 60 police officers could do nothing to quell.

Modern warfare rendered Halifax system of forts museum pieces. Streets laid out for riders on horseback were not built for the motor car and the peninsula has only two exits to the countryside beyond.

Communist inspired Seaman's International Union destroyed the Canadian Merchant Marine and it has never recovered.

Confined to its peninsula the city has nowhere to go but up and the harbour today is barely visible from the Citadel which has never fired a shot in anger.

Lone Survivor

Vin Strong

I listened to a synthetic AI reader version. Save that there was no inflection I didn't twig the voice was artificial. There were squeals and squawks on the stream. It's sad to think that there is need for people such as this in this world of ours.

The Rise and Fall of Derek Cowell

The Rise and Fall of Derek Cowell

Valerie Sherrar

High School Confidential.

Must say when I passed through those years all I wanted was to survive the experience, I had no knowledge or understanding of the social politics that went on in the background.

Unless you understand the world of social media this story will make absolutely no sense. And a lad with three sisters would get no bathroom time unless he had his own ensuite. Life was so different when you grew up with the two-holer down the path where gals were not loath to linger. How I date myself. At this age we barely had a telephone.

The girls in his life are manipulative or even blackmailing--three sisters. The tale is told by Derek in a frank stream of consciousness style with occasional dialog thrown in.

The 6:20 Man

The 6:20 Man #1

The 6:20 Man

David Baldacci, Zachary Webber (Narrator), Christine Lakin (Narrator), Mela Lee (Narrator)

Book two has a complete new cast of readers. Travis appears to have switched careers from investment annalist here to former Ranger secondered to Homeland Security.

In fact we learn the Ranger Service entitled Travis to an MBA compliments of the GI Bill and he got recruited to do some clandestine investigating. Three young toughs learn the hard way you don't mess with a Ranger.

In the end the local situation unravels around Travis but the worldwide money laundering driving it proves too big and the repercussions too great to pursue it further.

Unfortunately foreign interference in internal affairs and Black Money are all too real.

The Edge

he 6:20 Man #2
The Edge
David Baldacci, Zachary Webber (Narrator), Erin Cottrell (Narrator),
Will Collyer (Narrator), Erin Bennett (Narrator), Tiffany Smith (Narrator)

Having missed book one in the series I'm not in on why Travis is 6:20 Man.

It should be obvious if even a dead body dropped off a cliff onto rocks.

Small towns make for little privacy but secrets still abound. Outsiders
are not welcomed.

Having gotten access to book 1 He's 6:20 man as that's the commuter
train he caught to work.

Bedding  your client?

Decent time waster.

Thunder Below!: The USS *Barb* Revolutionizes Submarine Warfare in World War II

Thunder Below!: The USS *Barb* Revolutionizes Submarine Warfare in World War II

Eugene B. Fluckey, Corey Snow (Narrator)

The author has an unfortunate name but suffers from no sense of humility. Definitely not Canadian. He owes a debt to the people who built a boat that survived depths beyond its rated soundings, hundreds of depth charges, and rode out a typhoon without diving.

What's unique here is an American Sub in Chinese and Japanese Waters rather than Germans and British in the North Sea.

As ship's captain he is quick to give credit to the men under him for his successful missions. Despite his daring-do he brings all his men back alive, no small feat where so many subs are lost.

He explains jargon when he uses it and spares the reader the tedium of naval protocol.

Codename Nemo: The Hunt for a Nazi U-Boat and the Elusive Enigma Machine

Codename Nemo: The Hunt for a Nazi U-Boat and the Elusive Enigma Machine

Charles Lachman, Qarie Marshall (reader)

The story of U-505. I've seen the fictitious U-571 which claims the US captured the enigma. History is bunk. Don't believe anything you read in print or hear or see on radio or TV, especially tabloids. Social Media.... And if you've ever been involved in an event reporters carried you'll wonder, where was I when that happened. Am I cynical....

The most remarkable part of this story is that the German Sailors aboard the sub were kept incommunicado in violation of the Geneva Convention until the end of the war and the thousands aboard the vessels involved in the seizure were sworn to silence on pain of death. Their superiors maintained the secret as well. How they hid a 200 ft sub is another matter.

Station Eleven

Station Eleven

Emily St. John Mandel, Kirsten Potter (Narrator)

Set in Toronto initially at locations I've actually visited such as Allan Gardens, The Elgin, Queens Quay. I've ridden streetcars, the subway. I'm getting tired of attempting to follow novels that jump around in time and place. We have here a traveling troop of entertainers somehow linked to a former star actor/movie star. Throw in the EMT we meet in the initial stages.

At the heart of this tale is a Pandemic which figures in a story written 6 years before Covid. The troop attempts to make a living in a post-apocalyptic world. Described in detail are the inevitable tensions between the performers inevitable in any close-knit group.

I've assayed reading this book several times since it first came out and may make better progress listening to an audiobook.

The time and place are constantly changing back in time to earlier periods of key character's lives. Members of the orchestra are referred to by the instruments they play, not their names.

Station Eleven is a space station in a Graphic Novel.

The book begins and ends with the death of the character playing King Lear.

How to Cook Everything

How to Cook Everything

How to Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food

Mark Bittman

I'm finding the culinary wisdom amassed here interesting and practical. The author has become a celebrity chef and influencer with newspaper columns and social media posts. His initial publication has grown to an entire library of topics. He does have certain biases which reflect his income and access to fresh ingredients.

As the title suggests his approach is to explain how food is prepared, not to give the reader specific detailed recipes. As a chef he probably doesn't follow recipes in the first place. The average person engaged in food preparation is not likely to mix their own curry or chili powder, make their own mustard or ketchup, infuse oils, create fancy sauces or pastes but it is informative to read what goes in them.

This is not the type of book anyone is likely to read cover to cover though I did make it half way. It's another matter investing $56.00 in the book.

Proof

Jilly Truitt #3

Proof

Beverley McLachlin

This is the third outing for this defense lawyer, now a single parent. A young woman aids a rock star's career and after 3 miss carriages gives him a daughter or so it seems. They disagree over using the child for publicity purposes, the mother favouring the child's privacy. After the inevitable divorce an ugly custody battle ensues. Jilly gets involved after the child is abducted while the father sleeps on a private beach.

Justice is what can be proved in a court of law, truth is quite another matter. The case in question here shows what happens when law enforcement have tunnel vision.

Haven Point

Haven Point

Virginia Hume, Cassandra Campbell (Narrator)

Life among the yacht club set. Not the kind of people with whom I normally associate.

When a hurricane strikes the delicacy of their life is exposed and it is the working class stiffs the elites so disdain who are called upon to effect repairs.

The Goodnight Trail

Trail Drive #1

The Goodnight Trail

Ralph Compton, Scott Sowers (Reading)

No one could consider this great literature but it is the first in a 34-book series. Charles Goodnight was a real Texas Ranger Scout who discovered the Palo Duro Ravine during his travels and when he left the Rangers rounded up a few thousand wild Texas Longhorns and corralled them in that natural stockade.

This tale interested me because I've read of him before and been to Palo Duro.

The Life Impossible

The Life Impossible

Matt Haig, Joanna Lumley (narrator), Jordan Stephens (narrator)

Grace inherits a house on a remote Spanish Mediterranean Island from a woman she barely knew and met only briefly. Grace, a retired Math teacher appreciates the logical nature of her chosen subject. The legacy bequeathed her is anything but. Suddenly she can sense the thoughts of those around her and not just humans. She can sense the ethos of inanimate objects. Worse she can see the future. These gifts are not something she asked for or particularly enjoys.

The book embraces what I'd call New Age philosophy.

Grace goes to a casino and her talents make poker a steal.

The suggestion that none of the reporters got the story right and the one exception that did ended up in institutional care rings so true.

Kit's Wilderness

Kit's Wilderness

David Almond, Charles Keating (Narrator)

The location, a coal mining town. The author is Welsh but the town could be there, in Virginia, Cape Breton or Springhill. Coal mining is dangerous work. You may have heard of the tradition of taking a canary into the mine Firedamp is odourless. Collieries are notoriously unstable.

The Welsh aren't the only singing coalminers. In any industry where there is tragedy and unexplained occurrences myths and superstitions abound and little people.
