The story continues following Otto's arranged marriage to a wealthy merchant's daughter, tales of the gal's lover, and Axel's on the Northern frontier so the point of view jumps from one to another from place to place.
Otto is an apprentice wizard and the hidden tower is the location where he gets his training from the ghost of a dead mage who appears to him in a mirror. The portals provide a sort of wormhold that provides instant transport between Portals.
The tale is filled with intrigue, battles and betrayals. Six more volumes follow.
